Offline learning for a road trip: test before you leave

Find out at the kitchen table, not in the back seat. A ten-minute rehearsal for any learning app, and a paper game for when the battery runs out.

Downloaded doesn't always mean ready offline

An installed app can still need a sign-in, a content download or a connection for part of what it does. Some only fail once you're out of signal. Before you rely on one away from home, test the exact activities your child will want.

Do a rehearsal on the actual device

Use the phone or tablet your child will have in the car. Tick each step as you go. Nothing here is saved, and it resets when you close the page.

Your result holds for that version of the app on that device. An update, or a different device, can behave differently.

Check what "free" covers

Write down what works without paying, whether a subscription or trial is involved, whether ads appear, and whether a grown-up has to download anything extra. Then read the store listing and the privacy policy too.

Pack a no-screen backup

Draw three boxes on a piece of paper and choose a target number, like 10. Put four dots in the first box and six in the second. In the third, write 4 + 6 = 10. Now ask your child to find another pair that makes 10.

Use a smaller target if that matches the math they're learning, or make it a contest to find every pair. It's a game for the drive, not a test.

Match the task, not just the age label

For reading, pack a favorite book to share and some paper to draw or write about the best part. For math, use numbers and operations your child has already met. A wide age range on an app's store page can't tell you whether one activity fits your child today.

Before you buy or subscribe

Check the device and system requirements, the price, how renewal works and which features work offline on the current store page. If there's a free trial, put its end date in your calendar. A screen recording can help you decide what to test, but it doesn't prove an activity works offline on your device.

Make the target

Target: Find two numbers that make it. Draw the dots, then write the sum.
